PROVENANCE: The T.F.G. Jones Collection of Japanese Ceramics. BIOGRAPHY: Murata Gen was one of the greatest Mingei potters of the 20th century. Born in Ishikawa prefecture, Murata wanted to become a painter, yet upon seeing Living National Treasure Hamada Shoji's works at an exhibition he was inspired to take up pottery and to pursue Mingei ideals. At the age of 40 Murata moved from Tokyo to Mashiko and approached Hamada who agreed to take Murata on as an apprentice. Murata became a true Mashiko/Mingei potter in art and lifestyle, and persevered through poverty and hardship to produce truly profound work.
