Shigaraki Tsubo or Jar, 1962
Stoneware, wood-fired red brown unglazed body with green and grey ash glaze with deposits, a band of incised cypress fence decoration around the shoulder, incised maker's mark. Together with a signed wooden Box.

PROVENANCE: The T.F.G. Jones Collection of Japanese Ceramics. BIOGRAPHY: The Takahashi family is one of the longest potting families in Shigaraki and is largely responsible for preserving the pottery tradition of the region, especially after the second world war. Rakusai III was considered one of the true masters of Shigaraki and Iga-yaki. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1958 Brussels Expo and in 1964 he was designated a Shigaraki Intangible Cultural Property.
