BIOGRAPHY: Hiroyuki WAKIMOTO was not born into a family of potters. Originally from Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture in Kyushu, he first studied textile design at the prestigious art school, Osaka Art College. He soon became dissatisfied with textiles and so left college however a visit to a college friend who was doing an apprenticeship with a ceramist in Bizen proved to be a turning point in his life. He was inspired by Bizen-yaki and, at the age of 30, he became an apprentice under accomplished ceramist Joji Yamashita. Nine years later, in 1990, Wakimoto established his own kiln and studio in Bizen.
