LITERATURE: Bonhams Contemporary Ceramics Catalogue, 9 June 1999, lot 89 for a similar example from the Susan Peterson Collection. The introduction by Peterson states how lot 89 was representative of the first pieces he made in Mashiko in the 1920s. 'In those days Hamada was grinding up green sake bottles (containing copper for colour in the glass) and melting the glass in the flue of his hill kiln, regrinding the melt into powder and mixing it together with his clear glaze to get this green colour.'
