'Metamorphosis', Large Kohiki Jar
Stoneware, Kohiki style with white slips over a rich iron body, decorated with a stag beetle set against incised leaves and a butterfly set against chrysanthemums, white inlaid linear design to the sides, painted maker's mark. Together with a signed wooden Box.

PROVENANCE: The T.F.G. Jones Collection of Japanese Ceramics. BIOGRAPHY: Kayama is the eldest son of the famed painter Kayama Matazo. After graduating from Tama Art University where he studied Japanese style painting, he studied in Iga with the potter Banura Shiro who taught him Kohiki style firings. In 1989 he established his own kiln in Oiso, Kanagawa.
