Vase with flaring Lip from the 'Black Firing', 1981
Stoneware, matt black and speckled dark grey glaze with green flashes, contrasting dark bronze band around the rim, impressed LR seal

PROVENANCE: The Berkeley Collection, London. Purchased from Lucie Rie in 1981. EXHIBITED: 'Gwen John & Lucie Rie', Olympia, London, 2000 LITERATURE: – Tony Birks ‘Lucie Rie’, Marson House, 1999 p.73; ‘A curious kiln event had given Lucie a forewarning of Hans’ death. Opening a kiln in early May that year, Lucie was horrified to find all her pots were black, unlike anything she had ever made before. She could think on no technical reason at the time for this sombre firing, and she asked Cyril Frankel to dispose of the pots as quickly as possible. Knowing Hans was very ill, she had gone straight to Frome and stayed with him until a few days before he died.’

CONDITION: Some ochre coloured filler around the foot rim, where the glaze had run over and required grinding back. Otherwise in good condition with no further damage or restoration.
